Aquarium & Seabed Motion Lamps
An aquarium motion lamp gives you a slow underwater scene in a lamp: fish, coral, or a seabed landscape drifting steadily past in coloured light. You will see the same lamps listed as seabed motion lamps, and the two names describe the same effect.
What an aquarium motion lamp shows
These are scene lamps and not wax lamps, and that difference should be noted before purchase. There are no blobs, nor a wax cycle. Rather, an image is either printed or molded into the lamp, which moves inside the lamp case either through a motor mechanism or through the heat generated by the bulb. Thus, the fish move past a static background, forming a repetitive cycle rather than the non-repetitive one of the lava lamp.
That makes them a different proposition. A lava lamp is unpredictable, and you watch it for the shapes. An aquarium lamp is steady and predictable, which is exactly why it works so well as a night light or a background lamp in a room where you are doing something else.
Because there is a moving part, most models make a faint sound in use.
